Profile: Adam Ficek

Singer, songwriter, and drummer Adam Ficek records and performs with Babyshambles, one of the country’s foremost rock bands, and Roses Kings Castles, a solo venture built around his self-penned quixotic pop songs, yet his own tastes are – like so many modern music-lovers’ – not so singularly identifiable. Adam’s open-armed attitude towards DJ-ing is perfectly suited to today’s diverse climate, where rock-worshipping indie kids thrash to electro; electro scenesters gorge themselves on house and pop; trance devotees flit between jazz and folk, and drum and bass enthusiasts remain suckers for the squall of an electric guitar – where everything goes, and anything does.

In an age when nu-rave has come and gone, Justice and Erol Alkan’s deft fusion of guitars and beats have long since altered the DNA of the dancefloor, and initiatives such as Ibiza Rocks have all but obliterated the once impenetrable dance-rock divide, the tastes of today’s clubber have never been so varied.

And yet, despite the unconsciously ingrained anything-goes mentality of the iPod generation, audiences and DJs alike are still too often ruled by the prejudice that one kind of punter will only appreciate one kind of music. It is easy to assume that Adam – a key-player in a well-known indie band – would perform DJ sets advertising only this facet of his character, when nothing could be further from the truth.

His sessions behind the decks encompass a vast musical canon, carefully and winningly selected by an unbiased individual in thrall to music – all music – for its own sake, taking in anything from Voodoo Ray to the Rapture, the Ting Tings to MGMT, Prodigy to Hot Chip.

Having played ecstatically received sets across the globe, including high points at Gatecrasher Summer Sound System, Planet Love, Es Paradis, Judgement Sundays, Alpha Club (Dubai), Bang Bang Club (Berlin), Radio One – Big Weekend After Party with Zane Lowe and Annie Mac, Coach (Ireland) and Sankeys, Adam is well-versed in delivering the sonic goods to crowds of every musical persuasion. Equipped with a record collection that celebrates and reaffirms the hedonistic fluidity of an entire generation of clubbers, he is as successful pumping up wide-eyed dance crowds as he is inciting mass singalongs in roomfuls of liquored-up rockers. In his own words: “My approach to DJ-ing is to respond to the crowd, maybe give them something they haven’t heard, but also give them what they want.”
