The Beatz E-nterview

Beatz talks with Paul Masterson about his latest project, Sushi, plus a few other things. Check this out.

Beatz: Why Sushi?
Paul: I DJ'd in Japan last year and am going over there this November. I was completely inspired by the Japanese culture. Sushi just sounded like a cool name, and of course appropriate in relation to the Japanese culture. However, I am a vegetarian and don't eat fish!
Beatz: Is the vocal on The Earthshaker a sample, quote or something of your own?
Paul: Its a guy we have used on previous tracks.  His name is Stefan Frank and he is American. Stefan does voice overs for t.v commercials.  He is great because he can do so many different voices..camp...butch. We have used him on previous tracks
Beatz: How did you go about choosing the mixes/mixers for the single release?
Paul: Minimalistix are very talented guys from Belgium, I have a good working relationship with their manager, so getting them to mix the track was inevitable.  I haven't put loads of mixes on because I feel the track is strong enough on its own, putting a few other mixes on there allows a DJ that likes the tune but prefers a more trancier mix, so its giving everyone an option.
Beatz: Can we ever expect to see an album release of all your best work?
Paul: I make all different types of music, that's why I have released different tracks under different pseudonyms, so people don't know me as Paul Masterson and what I have done.  It would be fairly difficult to then release a 'Paul Masterson hits album because of that reason.  I also don't like my name too much.  I think it stems from my school days  when I was called by my surname and I really disliked it.  I am really sensitive and it would always sound so harsh and un-friendly so that might have something to do with me performing under different names.
Beatz: What was the inspiration for your video?
Paul: I made Earthshaker back in the early part of this year and it has been caned in Ibiza throughout the summer. Garlands have been hosting one of the most talked about parties over there and I was booked to play at their closing party at the infamous Space, we thought what better place to shoot the video. Its a fun video that just shows people getting off on the whole atmosphere that Ibiza creates. It definitely gives people a taste of Ibiza if they haven't been and for those who have been, I'm sure it will bring their hairs up on their arms again. It does me that's for certain.
Beatz: What are your favourite tunes around at the moment?
Paul: I'll give u my top 3: Come into my dream - DJ Foggy, New track by Gouryella - Ferry Corsten doing what he does best and Turntable Junkie - Shalldruck Germany
Beatz: If you could chose any event or club in the world to perform, where would you chose?
Paul: Berlin Love Parade, the atmosphere would be un-real.  I haven't been to Australia yet.  I've heard so many good things about it and will hopefully get to go there on tour at the end of the year.
Beatz: Do you think that dance music is becoming an old, out of date art, and will become the rock and roll of the 90s? I.e. listened to by those who are now in their 30s, whilst the teenagers and twenty-somethings are into numetal?
Paul: No way.  Music is so fresh and progressing more and more, what with equipment becoming so cheap, young people are making amazing tunes in their bedrooms.  If you go to a club, nearly every club plays dance music..if you want a Nu-metal night you have to look that extra bit harder.  Dance music will always be around, its the sound of the future.
Beatz: Do you see the Internet as an effective way to promote dance music and are you concerned about how the Internet is used to distribute illegal copies of music?
Paul: It is good because it promotes unsigned talent and doesn't rely on big wigs from labels to pick and choose, it allows the public the choice.  I have to say though that I love making music and its how I make my living, just like any other occupation..so I think if someone was to go and download my tunes for free, it would be unfair.  Artists do need to get paid to carry on producing their work.
